A Blue Pillow on a Bed

To mark the end of the second semester of our MA, we produced a digital exhibition, and this was my contribution, A Blue Pillow on a Bed. The piece itself demands space, not just because of its size (it measures 100 x 200 cm) but because it has a presence. The piece creates a space that is distinct from the room in which it hangs. The solitude of the piece emphasises this distinction, allowing the viewer to be fully embraced by the landscape. A Blue Pillow on a Bed is a combination of sculptural and work on canvas. The canvas is upheld by two metal arms that protrude from the wall. Those arms are representative of the human figure: they engulf, embrace, and offer a hug. They are also branch-like reaching out.
The physical size effects how we interact with the work. The canopy is large to emphasis the smallness of the viewer. It is draped overhead and accompanied by a soundscape, wrapping around the viewer as they look up into the sky. The combination of visual and audio effects allows the viewer to escape into the work. The viewer is simultaneously looking in on that world and is a part of it.
I got lost in the sky when I was painting this!
Thank you for visiting, and stay tuned for more content coming soon!
